Antonio Schiavano
In 1981, at the age of 17, I discovered photography thanks to a reflex camera gifted to me by my father. At first, I didn’t fully know how to use it, but I soon realized it would become my preferred language of communication. While reading a book by Andreas Feininger, I came across a phrase that deeply inspired me: “Anyone who cannot take an interesting photograph with a cheap camera is unlikely to achieve anything better with an expensive one.” I began with still-life photography to study light and form. This self-taught path lasted seven years. I decided to give up my engineering studies to devote myself entirely to photography. In 1988 I moved to Milan, presenting my first portfolio. Within just two months, I landed my first professional assignment, thanks to Alberto Nodolini, Art Director at Vogue. It was the height of the Made in Italy boom, and in the following years, I solidified my career. In 1999, I opened my first studio in Milan, on Via Watt 10, in an old bolt factory. I chose to preserve the original character of the space, transforming it into a bright loft with various settings for photographic shoots. Since 1998, in addition to photography, I have taught and worked as a journalist. In my workshops, I refrain from showcasing my work and avoid discussing technique, focusing instead on methodology. I aim to bring out each participant’s individual expression without influencing them too much. Over the years, I have collaborated with numerous companies and advertising agencies, creating campaigns for Alitalia, Avon, Cinzano, Cotril, Deborah, Korff, Kraft, Neauvia, Nivea, Rilastil, The Bridge, and Trussardi. In 2016, I was chosen by Huawei to test their first smartphone cameras, demonstrating how to fully exploit their potential.
For me, photography today is influenced by technology, but the human ability to see and interpret reality remains crucial. This is why, beyond any layout, I strive to create images capable of conveying emotions and communicating my vision of the world. Research has always been a cornerstone of my artistic journey, leading me to develop fine-art photography projects aimed at telling stories—both my own and those of others—through the visual power of images. My constant search for new inspiration allows me to experiment with new forms of artistic expression, with the goal of drawing the viewer’s attention to specific details and characteristics of the subject, often rooted in the simplicity of everyday life, which tends to remain invisible.
Despite many years in the field, I continue to see myself as a child, playing and marveling at the beauty of the world around me, expressing myself through photography with a sense of innocence and passion that endures over time.
